To identify the core challenges users face with home design tools, we conducted a series of user interviews and exploratory research. Participants shared their struggles with overwhelming choices, visualizing furniture placement, and navigating overly complex interfaces. These insights helped us define key usability problems

What is the problem?

Problem 1

Existing design tools are often too complicated for everyday users and don’t provide easy, real-world solutions for spatial planning and budget management.

People feel overwhelmed by too many design choices and have difficulty visualizing how furniture will fit, leading to disjointed or impractical layouts.

ideation.

By conducting user interviews, empathy mapping, and behavioral analysis, we were able to deeply empathize with users and uncover common challenges like decision fatigue and lack of design confidence. Using affinity diagramming and “How Might We” framing, we synthesized insights into clear themes. These informed the development of distinct personas, grounded in real user needs, which guided our design decisions moving forward.

From Ideas to Structure.

Mapping this end-to-end user flow was crucial in helping us understand the full journey—from onboarding to purchase and beyond.

It allowed us to:

  • Identify experience gaps, such as unclear handoffs between design and shopping modes.

  • Visualize user intent at each stage to help prioritize key touchpoints like the AI quiz, moodboard creation, and AR placement.

  • Spot redundancies and streamline steps, boosting task efficiency and reducing friction.

  • Align cross-functional teams—design, content, and tech—around a shared mental model of the user journey.
